Make Your Own Trail Mix

My kids both LOVE cereal, and this morning at breakfast both wanted a little bit of all four kinds we had on hand. After they each had their bowls filled with Cheerios, Honey-Nut Cheerios, Rice Chex, and Shredded Oats, my 3-year old asked for Goldfish too, “I want to make party mix!” 

Normally I would have saved the party mix making for later in the day, but since we are traveling today, I thought why not? Let’s make some trail mix (or party mix—however you prefer to call it).  So I brought out the goldfish. We even added some M&M’s that I had bought for the trip. You could also add dried fruit, pretzels, nuts, or seeds. The kids poured their mixes into plastic containers, put on the lids, and set them aside for later.

Making trail mix is so easy and so much fun for the kids because they get to be involved in choosing just what they want. And as far as snacks go, it’s a choice you can feel good about, with a good balance of carbohydrates, fats, and, if you add some nuts or seeds, protein.

Now I just have to remember to make some mixes for my husband and myself too, since the kids aren’t likely to be generous with sharing theirs!
